Yet another project
24 Jan 2006For some reason I always find myself compelled to take on more and more projects in my spare time. I think it’s because I really enjoying building stuff (even if the stuff is intangible), and so I’m always ready to take on a project that results in something new being created.
So, here I am again, ready to start on yet another project, while I currently have plenty of projects to keep me busy. This project will be slightly different than my usual fare—this time, I want to try my hand at building a content-oriented web site.
Actually, this project is a bit of experiment. I want to see if I can build a site that is interesting enough that it will generate enough traffic on its own to generate a positive cash flow. That is, via adsense or whatever, I want to have a site that will at least pay for its own hosting fees.
Ok, so the goal isn’t earth-shattering in any respect. But I think it will at least be fun, and it’s something I haven’t done before. And I plan to document the development of this project right here. Here’s what I did this morning toward the goal:
I have imported a new rails project into a new subversion repository. Rails is overkill for a simple content site, but who knows—maybe I’ll end up with something complicated enough to justify it. :)

Sounds interesting. I think that’ll probably be pretty hard to pull off… I’ll be interested to see how it develops. One thing I’ve always wondered about is, if you have a site that’s making ad-sense-bank and you simply copy it to another url, do some minimal rebranding, can you double your money? Another interesting experiment would be to see if taking whatever site you come up with and running it through a web-translator say, into Chinese, would replicate earnings. Anyway – cool idea.
