Webstore by Amazon
28 Jan 2008I got an email from Amazon about their new WebStore by Amazon offering. Like Shopify, it’s a just-add-water storefront for people wanting to sell their products.
This seems like a natural step for Amazon, considering their recent product offerings like payment processing and fulfillment services.
Perhaps my days of building custom e-commerce applications for clients like Griffin Technology are numbered?

But still, 7% commission for just a storefront! And they don’t even bring any traffic in ! Not a good deal from my point of view.
Nah – designers just evolve a little here and there to compensate for our ever changing environment.
It was interesting to see 3 days later on TechCrunch that Amazon’s web services had gone down for several hours already.
And also interesting that most of the people Amazon seemed to send these invites to were designers … people who build their own sites or have at least gone as far as buying some sort of web development type book from Amazon. Doesn’t seem like the best fit for their marketing efforts. Would have been better if they had targeted people who might have an ebay storefront since they would be an ideal market to go after – people who don’t have the web skills and have no inclination to hire someone to do things for them either.
